Trial for the Jet Set case continues with the presentation of key evidence

The judicial process seeking to clarify the responsibilities for the collapse of the Jet Set nightclub roof enters a decisive stage. This Friday, the Fourth Criminal Chamber of the National District resumes the trial against Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, with the continuation of the evidentiary phase led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The hearing, scheduled for 9:00 in the morning, will focus on the appearance of witnesses and experts. These experts will be subjected to rigorous questioning by the Prosecution, followed by cross-examination by the defense and the plaintiffs’ lawyers, in an effort to determine the exact causes of the collapse that shocked Dominican society.

Technical and expert findings

The previous session marked a turning point with the testimony of forensic engineer Eduardo Adolfo Fierro. The expert was emphatic in pointing out the existence of an overload in the roof structure, categorically ruling out external factors such as seismic phenomena, adverse weather conditions, explosions, or the fire that occurred in 2023.

The technical analysis presented to the court has been conclusive in excluding fortuitous events, focusing the investigation on the structural conditions prior to the collapse of the establishment.

In addition to the testimonies, the file includes a robust body of digital and documentary evidence:

  • Forensic analysis of mobile devices.
  • Audiovisual material documenting the condition of the premises.
  • Records of previous reports regarding leaks and humidity problems.
  • Conversations and photographs regarding roof maintenance.

Context of an unprecedented tragedy

The collapse of the structure occurred in the early hours of April 8, 2025, while merengue artist Rubby Pérez was performing before a large audience. The tragic toll of the event was 236 people dead and more than 180 injured, becoming one of the most regrettable events in the country’s recent history.

Currently, the court is in the phase of evaluating the evidentiary elements. The continuity of the trial is fundamental for the judicial system to determine the criminal responsibility of the defendants, Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, after exhausting the due process of presentation and discussion of the evidence presented by the prosecuting body.
