In a dominant performance, right-handed pitcher George Kirby led the Seattle Mariners to victory over the Los Angeles Angels, ending a five-game losing streak.
Kirby Shines with 14 Strikeouts
Kirby, after an excellent performance, achieved 14 strikeouts, the most in his career, in seven innings without allowing walks. The Mariners won with a score of 3-2.
That’s the best I’ve seen from George. He was filling the zone, but with quality pitches. He had everything working. … A pretty exceptional job.
Dan Wilson, Seattle Manager
Kirby matched Miami’s Max Meyer for the most strikeouts in a game this season, earning his first win of 2025. He retired his first 11 batters and the last 10, frustrating the Angels with his four-seam fastball and slider.
The pitcher had had a complicated start to the season, losing his previous three starts due to a shoulder injury. This time, he lowered his ERA from 8.56 to 6.53, showing the level that led him to the American League All-Star team in 2023. Kirby’s only blemish was a single by Mike Trout and a home run by Taylor Ward. However, he recovered, striking out Chris Taylor to end the fourth inning and completing three consecutive scoreless innings. Andres Munoz secured the victory in the ninth inning, striking out Trout with a runner on first. The Mariners now head to Arizona for a three-game series, hoping Kirby’s leadership continues. We needed a big one today, and I hope this sets the tone for us. I hope we keep rolling. It’s always good to go out there and give your team the best chance to win after a couple of losses.
George Kirby
It’s probably one of the most important openings we’ve had, with the situation of our pitchers and George being able to go out there and really deliver the performance of his career. We know who George is, and that’s the guy.
