Chicago Cubs Send Matt Shaw to Triple-A

The Chicago Cubs have made the decision to send their promising prospect, Matt Shaw, to their Triple-A affiliate, Iowa, following a challenging start to the season for the young third baseman.

Shaw, selected 13th overall in the 2023 amateur draft, has underperformed in his first games, batting .172, including one home run and three RBIs. In addition, he has recorded 18 strikeouts in 68 plate appearances.

We want a productive player to return. Sometimes you have to take a step back to achieve that. At this level, it’s about production, and at the point we’re at, obviously, players are given time to work on it, but we thought we saw enough to need a break from this level and get some at-bats in Triple-A.

Craig Counsell, Cubs Manager

Cubs manager Craig Counsell commented that it is common for young hitters to face difficulties at the beginning of their careers. According to Counsell, Shaw has struggled at the start of the season, and getting some success could help him regain confidence and offensive rhythm.

In addition to Shaw’s situation, the Cubs have also made other moves to their roster. Right-handed pitcher Eli Morgan was placed on the 15-day injured list due to an elbow ailment. On the other hand, infielder Vidal Brujan was reinstated after his stint on the 10-day injured list, and right-handed pitcher Nate Pearson was sent to Iowa.

Before Tuesday’s game, left-handed pitchers Luke Little and Daniel Palencia were called up from Triple-A. Palencia had a standout performance, pitching a scoreless inning in the team’s victory.

Counsell explained that Morgan felt discomfort in his elbow on Monday night. The team will evaluate Morgan’s situation upon returning to Chicago after Wednesday’s game. Morgan, acquired in November, has an ERA of 12.27 in seven appearances. Last season, with the Guardians, he went 3-0 with an ERA of 1.93 in 32 appearances.

The Cubs, who lead the National League Central with a 12-8 record, are also facing the loss of their ace, Justin Steele, who suffered a left elbow injury that will require surgery and will sideline him for the rest of the season.
