Alex Bregman Leaves Game with Injury

Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman was removed from the game in the fifth inning of Friday’s doubleheader opener against the Baltimore Orioles, apparently due to a lower body injury.

Bregman connected a simple, strong hit to left field and made a wide turn before returning to first base. The two-time All-Star gestured towards the Red Sox dugout, with manager Alex Cora running to check on the condition of the team’s star batter. Bregman did not wait to assess the severity of the injury before heading to the stairs to be examined.

Bregman, a two-time World Series winner who played the first nine seasons of his career in the Major Leagues with the Houston Astros, signed with Boston in February. Entering Friday’s game, he had a batting average of .297 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.

Abraham Toro entered as a pinch runner for Bregman and remained in the game as Boston’s first baseman. Nick Sogard started Friday’s game at first base but moved to third base.
