Pittsburgh Pirates Fire Derek Shelton

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced this Thursday the dismissal of their manager, Derek Shelton.

The decision comes after a negative streak for the team, with seven consecutive losses and ten in the last eleven games. Currently, the Pirates (12-26) are ten games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division.

Shelton managed the Pirates from 2020, accumulating an overall record of 306-440 without achieving a winning season.

“I thought he was the right person for the job when we hired him. I also believe a change is now necessary,” said General Manager Ben Cherington.

Pirates President Bob Nutting noted the need to “act with a sense of urgency and take the necessary steps to correct this now and get us back on track as a team and organization,” highlighting that “there’s still a lot of baseball to be played.”

Don Kelly, who served as bench coach since 2020, has been named team manager.
