Carlos Sainz, a prominent Formula 1 driver, has expressed his opinion on the controversial race guidelines currently governing the competition. The Spaniard suggests that the sport could benefit from a more flexible approach in decision-making, similar to the analysis carried out by former drivers turned television commentators.
Criticisms of the Current Guidelines
Career guidelines, agreed upon by the drivers and the FIA at last year’s Qatar Grand Prix, have generated controversy due to their strict application in track incidents. Sainz was the subject of one of these decisions at the Dutch Grand Prix, although the penalty was later overturned after a review. Another notable example, also criticized by Sainz, was the penalty imposed on Oscar Piastri after an incident with Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the Brazilian Grand Prix, a decision that could have significant repercussions in this year’s championship. Sainz believes that greater freedom for the stewards, who have the necessary experience to correctly assess race incidents, could improve the situation. The driver highlighted the analysis carried out by commentators such as Karun Chandhok, Anthony Davidson and Jolyon Palmer, who, according to him, demonstrate a great capacity to analyze and judge the incidents.I think that lately, after the races, I’ve seen analyses of quite a few incidents. In some, it was Karun Chandhok, in others Jolyon Palmer, and in some, I think Anthony Davidson. Every time I see this analysis and the verdict given by the drivers who have raced recently, I think they do a very good analysis and attribute the blame correctly, most of the time, to whoever really has it, or if it’s simply a racing incident.
