Michael Toglia Sent to Triple-A by the Rockies

Colorado Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque before Saturday’s game against the New York Mets. Toglia seemed to have established himself as the Rockies’ starting first baseman last year, batting .233 with 21 home runs after his call-up from Triple-A in June. He achieved his first multi-home run game on July 14, hitting three home runs against the Mets at Citi Field.

However, Toglia began this season with a 2-23 slump and didn’t hit a home run until his 65th plate appearance. He batted .247 with six home runs in 26 games from April 16 to May 14, before hitting .125 with 22 strikeouts in his next 40 at-bats.

Currently leads the majors with 81 strikeouts in just 186 at-bats.

Needs to improve overall on offense.

Warren Schaeffer, Interim Manager of the Rockies

Rockies’ interim manager Warren Schaeffer commented that he wants Toglia to “go down and better control the strike zone.”

The 24-year-old player went 0-4 with two strikeouts while playing as the Rockies’ eighth batter in Friday’s 4-2 loss, leaving Colorado with a 9-48 record, the worst record after 57 games in the modern era.

It wasn’t working for him at the moment and he knows it. In the future, we expect great things from Mike.

Warren Schaeffer, Interim Manager of the Rockies

To replace Toglia on the roster, the Rockies selected the contract of infielder Keston Hiura from Albuquerque. Schaeffer said that Hiura, who reached double figures in home runs for the Milwaukee Brewers three times between 2019 and 2022, would likely see the most playing time at first base, although Kyle Farmer started at the position on Saturday.

The Rockies also designated infielder Aaron Schunk for assignment.
