Authorities search for suspect in Kris Boyd shooting
The New York Police Department has released surveillance images of a man wanted in connection with the shooting of Jets cornerback and prominent special teams player Kris Boyd. Boyd is in critical but stable condition, one day after being shot in midtown Manhattan. The investigation into the motive for the shooting continues, and authorities have not determined whether Boyd was the target of the attacker. No other injuries were reported and no arrests have been made. The shooting occurred on Sunday, shortly after 2 a.m. ET, outside a business on West 38th Street, near 7th Avenue. Police reported that a 29-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, but his name was not released. The office of New York City Mayor Eric Adams identified Boyd as the injured person. According to police sources, a man with a gun fired two shots after an altercation with Boyd, and fled the scene in a BMW X8 SUV. A Mercedes-Benz Maybach also left the scene. The Jets have stated they are “aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd”, but have declined to comment further. Boyd’s agent has not responded to requests for information.Boyd hasn’t played this season, which is his first with the Jets, after being placed on the injured reserve list in August due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key piece in a revamped special teams unit under the direction of new coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, Boyd was injured during training camp practice on August 2 and was removed from the field. Boyd was considered a standout special teams player during his first six seasons in the NFL, including much of the last two with the Houston Texans. He made headlines during the Texans’ divisional playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in January, when he celebrated a forced fumble on a kickoff by taking off his helmet and nearly shoving his special teams coach to the ground. Boyd played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being selected in the seventh round by the Vikings in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined the Houston practice squad later that season.“Everyone, please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family! Lord, please put your healing hand on Kris and guide him back to health and safety,” Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson posted.
