The New Orleans Saints bolster their quarterback position with the addition of a veteran. The team has reached a one-year agreement with Zach Wilson, according to sources.Wilson will take on the role of backup to Tyler Shough, the Saints’ second-round pick in 2025, who had a standout rookie season in New Orleans, after replacing Spencer Rattler, selected in the fourth round of 2024 and still on the team.In the previous season, the Saints had Jake Haener, also selected in the fourth round in 2023, as their third quarterback, but they allowed him to become a free agent this spring. Haener signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Saints’ coach, Kellen Moore, stated at the NFL scouting combine last month that the team planned to add one or two quarterbacks to the roster for the offseason program.Wilson, 26, signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins last offseason to serve as the team’s backup quarterback. He had little participation in the games in Miami, completing 6 of 11 pass attempts for 32 yards in four appearances. When quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was benched in Week 16, rookie Quinn Ewers was promoted to starter, while Wilson remained as a substitute. The opportunity with Miami arose after Wilson spent a year as Bo Nix’s backup with the Denver Broncos, where he didn’t attempt any passes during the 2024 season. Wilson stated that he learned “a lot” during his time with the Broncos.Wilson was selected by the New York Jets in 2021 with the second overall pick. In five seasons, he has thrown for 6,325 yards and 23 touchdowns, with 25 interceptions, completing 57% of his pass attempts.
