Meghan Turner Headlines New PWHL Team in Seattle
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) announces the appointment of Meghan Turner as general manager of the expansion team in Seattle. Turner, who served as assistant general manager in Boston Fleet, will now lead the project on the West Coast.
Turner, with previous experience under Danielle Marmer at Boston Fleet, will bring her MBA obtained during her university years at Quinnipiac. In addition, she has experience as a player in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and in the PWHPA, the precursor to the PWHL.
His first tasks include hiring the coaching staff and support personnel, as well as preparing for the exclusive expansion signing period, which will take place from June 4 to 8, and the expansion draft on June 9.
This appointment covers one of the two general manager positions for the PWHL expansion teams, with the position in Vancouver still vacant. The PWHL, comprised of six teams and in its second season, announced the addition of Vancouver and Seattle in separate press conferences at the end of last month.
Meghan brings an extraordinary combination of hockey experience, strategic vision, and professionalism to the PWHL Seattle. During her time in Boston, Meghan distinguished herself as a big-picture thinker who quickly earned the respect of players and staff alike.
Jayna Hefford, PWHL Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations
The PWHL centrally controls all its franchises and is responsible for hiring staff for each team.
Originally from Bedford, New Hampshire, Turner previously worked as a consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers and remains an active member of the Army National Guard.
Turner already had a taste of Seattle’s support for women’s hockey during Fleet’s 3-2 victory over Montreal in a shootout on January 5, in a neutral-site game played at the NHL Kraken’s Climate Pledge Arena, which will also serve as the home of the yet-to-be-named PWHL team. The game was the first of the PWHL’s nine-game “Takeover Tour” this season and drew a crowd of 12,608 spectators.
I am confident that we are entering an environment that is more than ready for women’s hockey. I am excited about the opportunity to build a team and an organization that reflects the city’s passion and the league’s excellence. We have a lot of work to do and I am ready to start.
