Scottie Scheffler, after waking up with the possibility of winning another Masters, took on a supporting role upon seeing Rory McIlroy triumph.

As the previous year’s champion at Augusta National, Scheffler had the honor of helping McIlroy put on the coveted green jacket.

At that moment, it was a very emotional day for him, I tried to stay out of the way and basically put his jacket on without embarrassing him or myself.

Scheffler described McIlroy as “a good friend,” and both have dominated the PGA Tour in recent years. Scheffler remains number 1 in the World Golf Ranking, a position that once belonged to McIlroy, who won four majors between 2011 and 2014.

Both golfers share perspectives that few can understand.

It was really cool for me to be able to see it because I have, I don’t understand what it’s like to be asked about the career Grand Slam, but I understand a little bit what it’s like to be asked: ‘Hey, you’ve achieved this, but you haven’t achieved that.’ It can be very draining for people sometimes.

Scheffler highlighted that it was a relief to see McIlroy achieve it, as he had accomplished everything in golf, except for the Olympic Games.

With a final round of 69, Scheffler finished in fourth place at the Masters. He recounted that he felt he was in contention until the 18th hole, with McIlroy struggling and Justin Rose only two strokes ahead.

I was in the 18th fairway last week, and Rose was 10-under. I said to myself, ‘I’m going to go at that pin. I’m going to try to make it.’ And then he birdied 18, and you’re like, ‘Well, the tournament’s over. I lost.’ I didn’t win, I lost, whatever.

Scheffler, when asked about McIlroy’s victory, responded with enthusiasm.

Was it amazing to see Rory win the Grand Slam? Of course it was. But, as far as my life is concerned, I try to live in the present. So, right now, I’m focused on this week. And when I get home next week, I’ll prepare for my next tournament. At the end of the day, my motivation is internal.

Scheffler’s list of achievements includes a dominant 2024 season, with victories at the Masters, The Players Championship, the Tour Championship, and four other major events, including the RBC Heritage.

Despite the fatigue from his Masters victory and the imminent arrival of his first child, Scheffler arrived in South Carolina and won the tournament at 19 under par, fueled by a second round of 63, surpassing Sahith Theegala by three strokes.

However, in 2025, Scheffler has not yet achieved any victories.

Last year, I got here pretty tired from the previous week, and I did a good job managing myself and how I moved around the golf course.
