Chelsea Strengthens: Alyssa Thompson Joins the Club
Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor expressed her satisfaction with the addition of American forward Alyssa Thompson, who has signed a five-year contract with the team. Thompson’s presentation took place before the opening match of the Women’s Super League (WSL) season, where Chelsea, the reigning champion, defeated Manchester City with a score of 2-1. Chelsea’s goals were scored by Aggie Beever-Jones and Maika Hamano. Thompson’s signing, coming from Angel City, was finalized for a record sum for the club, just before the transfer market closed.- Chelsea’s champions overcome Man City in the start of the WSL.

Bompastor described Thompson as a “great player” and a “great person”, and expressed her enthusiasm for working with the US national team forward. Thompson was unavailable for the match, as was Naomi Girma, who joined Chelsea in January. Bompastor confirmed that Girma suffered a calf injury during the week and will be evaluated next week, without specifying the recovery time.“We had already planned to incorporate a winger to the team before the transfer market, so it took quite a while, but we were able to bring her here and I am very happy because I know the quality she can bring to the team,” Bompastor stated in a press conference after the match.

Bompastor revealed some key areas in which the coaches have been working with Beever-Jones, including ball possession under pressure. Chelsea continues the season with a trip to Aston Villa next weekend, where Bompastastor hopes to have Thompson available.“Aggie had the opportunity to start the match and I think she was able to perform well, also score, which is important in her position,” said Bompastor.
