Fans of Universidad de Chile Released After Incidents in Argentina

Buenos Aires – The Argentine justice system has ordered the release of 104 fans of the University of Chile, who were arrested after the violent clashes that occurred during the match against Independiente de Avellaneda in the Copa Sudamericana. The information was confirmed this Friday by judicial sources. The release order was issued on Thursday by the Fiscal Instruction and Trial Unit 4, of the Buenos Aires town of Avellaneda. The incidents broke out near the end of the first half of the match, with the score tied at one goal and a 2-1 aggregate in favor of the Chilean team. Fans of the visiting team began to throw objects from the stands towards the lower part of the stadium, where supporters of the home team were located. Independiente fans tried to approach the visiting sector, which required police intervention. Despite efforts to control the situation, a group of local fans managed to access the stand where Chilean fans still remained, who were attacked. The clashes left a balance of about twenty injured, one of them in intensive care, and more than a hundred detainees, mostly from the visiting fans. Faced with the seriousness of the events, Chile’s Interior Minister, Álvaro Elizalde, traveled to Buenos Aires to meet with Argentina’s Security Minister, Patricia Bullrich.

“Those who did not commit any crime will be able to return home peacefully, those who committed crimes will pay for them. As we always say: whoever does it, pays for it, regardless of the club they belong to, regardless of their nationality,” Bullrich pointed out.
