Eddie Howe: Isak’s Future at Newcastle, a Decision Out of His Hands

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has revealed that he will not have the final say on Alexander Isak’s future at the club. The 25-year-old Swedish striker is currently training separately and did not participate in the Sela Cup matches against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid this weekend. Isak’s situation is uncertain, especially due to Liverpool’s interest. Newcastle rejected an offer of £110 million (148 million dollars) from the Anfield club for the player, who has three years left on his contract.

“That’s a decision I won’t make, that will be made by other people. For me, I’m just trying to manage the situation and manage the team, the most important thing is to manage the group of players I work with day in, day out, who I love to coach and help”.

Howe also commented on the rumors that Isak would not be sold this summer, stating that he is not aware of it and that there are ongoing discussions to which he does not have access. Newcastle, who signed Isak from Real Sociedad for £63 million (85 million dollars) in 2022, has set a price of £150 million (202 million dollars) to deter potential buyers. However, persuading the player to continue his career at St James’s Park could be a challenge. Isak’s situation has added urgency to Newcastle’s transfer window, which has suffered recent setbacks with players like Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, James Trafford, and João Pedro. In addition, the club is looking for a striker to replace Callum Wilson. Howe hopes that Anthony Gordon will not join the list of problems, after leaving injured in Saturday’s match. Howe mentioned that Gordon’s injury appears to be an ankle problem and hopes he recovers. In positive news for Howe, Newcastle are close to finalizing a deal for AC Milan’s German international defender, Malick Thiaw.
