Xavier McKinney Could Miss the Rest of the Preseason Due to Injury

Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney could miss the rest of training camp and the three preseason games due to a calf injury. Despite this situation, McKinney assures he is ready for the start of the regular season. McKinney, who was selected as an All-Pro in the first team last season, did not participate in Thursday’s practice after practicing on Wednesday.

“Obviously, I’m glad we caught it when we did, so I’m just trying to take it easy and then gradually ramp it up,” McKinney stated after Thursday’s practice. “But I’ll be ready when the time comes, for sure.”

The player emphasized that he will be available for the regular season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 7th. This injury adds to that of another high school starter, cornerback Nate Hobbs, who underwent knee surgery last week, but also expects to be ready for Week 1. McKinney, who signed a four-year, $67 million contract as a free agent in 2024, was second in the NFL last season with eight interceptions and quickly became a leader of the Packers’ improved defense.

Two other starters who did not practice on Thursday were wide receiver Jayden Reed (foot) and center Elgton Jenkins (back). Although the Packers are expected to use most of their starters in Saturday’s preseason game against the New York Jets, it is unlikely that anyone who did not practice on Thursday will play.
