Josh Metellus Reports to Vikings Training Camp Despite Contract Negotiations
EAGAN, Minn. – Missing spring practices is one thing, but missing part of training camp is quite another, according to Minnesota Vikings safety Josh Metellus. Metellus, a key piece in the team’s defense in the last two seasons, decided not to extend his absence from spring practices to the start of summer work. Despite not having an agreement on the contract extension he has been seeking, Metellus fully participated in the Vikings’ first training camp practice on Wednesday.Metellus signed a three-year contract extension in 2023, which will be void after this season. In the spring, he was absent from the 7-on-7 drills, which were the most intense periods of the Vikings’ practice plan. His approach left open the possibility that he could continue to reduce his participation until the parties agreed on a new contract or a salary increase for 2025, but he said that, in his opinion, it is too close to the start of the season to do so.“The dialogue has gone well. I’m not too worried about what’s happening. I’m just doing my part, being here for the team, trying to be a leader, a captain, and I can’t do that from the bench. A big part is that the guy I am in this building is the one leading the way, so there’s no point in me not participating,” Metellus stated.

“I did the work, man. In the last two years, I played more than 2,000 plays, and that’s all I have. People can say what they want, about the type of player I am, but at the end of the day, the tape has no sound,” added Metellus.
