The Hawaiian archipelago is in a critical stage of assessment and recovery following the passage of Hurricane Lowell, a phenomenon that left a trail of destruction in the western islands and two deaths that are currently under investigation by local authorities. Although the center of the system remained in open waters, its effects were strongly felt, causing significant structural damage.
Impact on infrastructure and supplies
The most concerning situation is concentrated at the port of Lanai, which has been left inoperable. State authorities have warned that repairs could extend for two weeks, raising an alert regarding the supply of fuel and food for the population. Likewise, the island of Kauai has been one of the most affected, reporting:
- Destruction of road sections and highways.
- Downing of power lines and massive power outages.
- Severe damage to tourist complexes and hotels in the coastal area.
Despite the efforts of electric cooperatives to restore service, especially in hospital centers, thousands of customers remain without power supply while crews work on the network damaged by strong winds.

Governor Josh Green has formally requested a federal disaster declaration from the President of the United States to accelerate economic and logistical support in Kauai and Maui counties. This measure seeks to expedite recovery, comparing the magnitude of the disaster to historical events of great impact in the region.
Regarding the victims, authorities are investigating the death of a 74-year-old man found on the south shore of Kauai, allegedly linked to the storm surge. On the other hand, in Oahu, a man lost his life when a tree fell on his makeshift home in a park, an incident that also remains under official analysis.
Weather situation in the Pacific
After moving away from Hawaii, Lowell lost intensity, degrading into a tropical storm. Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring the Pacific, where Tropical Storm Norbert recently formed. This new system is moving westward, away from populated areas, and does not pose an imminent threat to land areas at this time.
