Blow to drug trafficking: Marijuana camouflaged at Las Américas Airport seized
In a strategic operation carried out at the Las Américas International Airport (AILA-JFPG), agents from the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), together with the Public Ministry and the Specialized Airport Security Corps (CESAC), managed to intercept a shipment of illicit substances that was intended to be brought into the country.
The discovery was made during routine inspection work in the cargo area. Thanks to scanning technology, security teams detected irregularities in a cardboard box, which immediately triggered security protocols. The intervention was supported by canine units, which confirmed the presence of controlled substances inside the package.
Operational details and capture
Following a thorough inspection carried out under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, authorities found a plastic tube hidden inside a blueprint holder. Inside, six packages of marijuana were located, wrapped in plastic bags, with a total approximate weight of seven pounds.
According to the shipping manifest, the box coming from Miami, United States, was addressed to a man who was recently arrested while leaving a shopping mall in the National District, just as he went to pick it up. At the time of his capture, authorities seized other packages containing the same substance from him.

Dominican authorities have intensified investigations to determine if there are other individuals linked to this international drug trafficking network. This case highlights the effectiveness of the controls implemented at the country’s ports and airports in the face of new tactics used by organized crime to attempt to evade surveillance.
The DNCD reaffirmed its commitment to maintain constant surveillance at air terminals to prevent the national territory from being used as a bridge for the trafficking of prohibited substances.
