DGCINE promotes access to the seventh art with the creation of the Alternative Cinema Network (Rescad)
The General Directorate of Cinema (DGCINE), under the management of its Dominican Cinematheque, has taken a fundamental step to democratize audiovisual consumption in the country with the launch of the Dominican Alternative Cinema Network (Rescad). This strategic project has the main objective of decentralizing film exhibition and offering new platforms for local and international talent.
The formal launch of this network was sealed with a collaboration agreement between DGCINE and the iconic Casa de Teatro Foundation. The signing, led by Marianna Vargas Gurilieva, general director of the state institution, and the renowned cultural manager Freddy Ginebra Giudicelli, turns this historic space into a fundamental pillar for the circulation of productions that usually have little presence in traditional commercial circuits.
A space for national talent
The new movie theater integrated into Casa de Teatro will not only serve as a screening point for feature films, documentaries, and short films, but will also function as a training center. The agenda will include:
- Periodic programming of Dominican and international cinema.
- Conversations and direct meetings with filmmakers and directors.
- Workshops focused on film appreciation and the creation of new audiences.
The DGCINE, through the Cinemateca Dominicana, will guarantee the success of this initiative by providing technical advice, content curation, and constant support in audience development.
Rescad was born to connect our works with more audiences and generate new opportunities for their exhibition and circulation. The incorporation of Casa de Teatro, an institution with a fundamental trajectory for Dominican culture, constitutes a significant starting point for this initiative.

Boosting film circulation
This project aligns with Fonprocine’s new support line, specifically designed to promote the exhibition of national works outside the conventional commercial scheme. Beneficiary projects will have in Rescad a strategic ally to connect their productions with the public, thus strengthening the entire value chain of Dominican cinema.
Casa de Teatro, which since 1974 has established itself as a cultural benchmark in the Dominican Republic, reaffirms with this alliance its historic commitment to all artistic expressions. Freddy Ginebra highlighted that joining the network represents a unique opportunity for cinema to find audiences in an environment that has always served as a home for the country’s creators.
With the deployment of this network, the DGCINE continues to advance in building a more inclusive, diverse, and accessible cinematic circuit for all generations, consolidating cinema as a vital pillar of the national cultural identity.
