Alfredo Pacheco questions the farewell speech of the former director of the National Police
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, spoke out regarding the recent farewell speech by Andrés Modesto Cruz Cruz, who concluded his tenure at the head of the National Police. For the legislator, although the message issued by the former official was accurate in its content, the timing and circumstances of his departure were not ideal for such statements.

Pacheco was emphatic in pointing out that, in his assessment, Cruz Cruz did not achieve the expected objectives during his administration. As his main argument, he cited the alarming crime statistics, mentioning that during the first seven months of 2026, 145 deaths at the hands of police officers were recorded, data that were reported by the institution itself.
Police reform: A long-term process
Despite the criticism, the congressman acknowledged that the National Police has undergone a significant transformation in recent years. According to his estimates, more than 90% of the institution’s members have managed to change their mindset, although he admitted that there are still groups that maintain obsolete practices that must be eradicated through constant purging.
The speaker of the lower house stressed that police reform must be viewed as a State policy that transcends government administrations, highlighting that each administration has contributed to institutional strengthening in a gradual manner.
Assessment of changes in the government cabinet
On another note, Pacheco validated the recent moves made by the Executive Branch, arguing that these changes seek to optimize public administration. Regarding the exchange of officials between institutions, he downplayed the criticism and stated that it is about leveraging the technical experience of public servants in strategic areas.

It is worth remembering that, in his farewell message, Cruz Cruz urged the agents to maintain integrity and not to cling to their positions, a stance that various sectors have interpreted as a warning about the challenges of corruption and the internal deterioration that the institution faces in the midst of a reform process.
