Irregularities mark the in-person admission process at UNAM

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is in the midst of a purification process after detecting various fraud attempts during the recent in-person examination period. This measure was implemented in response to anomalies previously recorded in the virtual modality, where atypical results and the misuse of artificial intelligence were identified.

The rector of the institution, Leonardo Lomelí, confirmed that, although the suspension of several applicants was carried out due to serious misconduct, the right of those affected to a thorough review of their files together with the authorities of the General Directorate of School Administration (DGAE) has been guaranteed.

Main incidents detected

  • Document alteration: Modifications were detected in registration receipts and applicant names to gain irregular access to the testing centers.
  • Use of prohibited technology: Several candidates were caught using cell phones in restricted areas, such as restrooms, during the test administration.
  • Attempted theft: Efforts were recorded to remove the questionnaire from the facilities for subsequent copying and dissemination.

Some misconduct was detected that led to the suspension, but they have the right to have it reviewed and for them, together with the authorities, the DGAE officials, to review the cause.

Next steps and publication of results

The extraordinary process, which brought together some 38,000 applicants at venues in Mexico City, Guanajuato, Oaxaca, and Baja California, included a significant logistical deployment, highlighting the attendance of more than 30,000 people at the Palacio de los Deportes alone. At that venue, 22 cases of alleged cheating were identified and are currently under analysis.

The university has established a strict schedule to resolve these disputes. The goal is for all reviews to conclude before the official publication of the results, which is scheduled for the weekend of August 29 and 30. The institution has been emphatic in pointing out that, if an error attributable to the university itself is proven, the applicant’s right will be immediately restored.

This admission cycle closes a chapter marked by the technological crisis that forced the UNAM to terminate contracts with external companies and return to in-person controls as the safest way to guarantee the academic integrity of its future students.
