Tatjana Maria Wins Title at Queen’s Club and Makes History

German tennis player Tatjana Maria, coming from the qualifying phase, culminated an unforgettable week in London by defeating American Amanda Anisimova, eighth seed, with a score of 6-3, 6-4. This triumph gives her the title at the Queen’s Club, becoming the first woman to achieve it in more than half a century. This victory marks the culmination of an extraordinary nine-day streak for the world number 86, who had previously surprised Madison Keys, second seed and Australian Open champion. At 37 years old, Maria becomes the oldest player to win a WTA title since Serena Williams achieved it in Auckland in 2020. On her way to the championship, Maria only conceded one set, highlighting victories over Elena Rybakina, fourth seed, and Karolina Muchova, sixth seed. The Wimbledon preparation event at Queen’s Club marked the return of female competitors, a fact that hadn’t happened since 1973, when Olga Morozova of the Soviet Union took the title. Maria dominated Anisimova with powerful serves and achieved an early break in the first set, accumulating 12 consecutive points to take a 4-1 lead. Despite Anisimova’s reaction, Maria secured the set. In the second set, Maria maintained her momentum, again achieving a 4-1 lead. Her seventh ace of the match propelled her to 5-3, and she finally closed out the match two games later, securing her first title in over two years.

“A dream come true. When I arrived here, I never thought I could lift the trophy at the end,” commented Maria. “When we arrived, my little daughter said: ‘Wow, that trophy is beautiful, very big’, and I said: ‘OK, let’s go for it. I will try to win it'”.

“In the end, I’ve won, it’s incredible. Very happy. Everything is possible if you believe in it. Follow your path, no matter what it is, but you have to keep going. I want to show this to my children and I hope they are proud. It’s incredible,” he added. Maria celebrated her victory with her arms raised, as she watched Anisimova’s forehand go wide on match point, before both players embraced at the net.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see you in the Wimbledon final because you really made me run today,” Anisimova said.
