Courtney Vandersloot Misses Rest of Season with Injury

The prominent WNBA player, Courtney Vandersloot, will be unable to participate in the remainder of the 2025 season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee, the Chicago Sky team announced on Sunday.

The point guard suffered the injury on Saturday while attempting a drive to the basket in the game against the Indiana Fever, and had to be taken off the court. After an MRI, the severity of the injury was confirmed, requiring surgery for its repair.

Vandersloot, who returned to the ranks of the Sky, the team that selected her in the 2011 draft and with which she won the WNBA title in 2021, had returned to the city this season after two years with the New York Liberty, where she was also part of the championship team in 2024.

The five-time All-Star and five-time All-WNBA team selection has been a constant figure in the league. The only time she missed more than seven games in a season was in 2014, due to a medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain, but she still played 17 games.

Vandersloot is the Sky’s all-time leading scorer, a record she took from her wife, Allie Quigley, last month, and leads the league in career assists with 2,886. This season, she was averaging 10.6 points and 5.3 assists per game for Chicago (2-5), but above all, she had the task of providing leadership to a developing team with young players like Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso.

“She is our engine. She is our captain and leader on the court, so obviously it’s a tough blow. But let’s hope it’s not as serious as we think. We hope she can recover, but for now, we all have to support her; we all have to lift each other up.”

Vandersloot’s absence will likely mean that Hailey Van Lith, selected in the first round of the 2025 draft, will have to take on more responsibilities. The Sky also has point guard Moriah Jefferson on its roster, although she has yet to debut in the regular season due to an injury.

“It’s heartbreaking to see someone [get injured], but especially one of your teammates and someone who means so much to our team and to this organization,” Van Lith said on Saturday. “Right now, we’re giving her a lot of energy, praying for her. Whatever the future holds for this team, I trust that we will find a way to make this moment mean something in the end. We are very worried, and our hearts are with Sloot.”
