Brawl on the Court: Ejections in Match between Sun and Sky

An altercation on the court resulted in the ejection of three players on Wednesday night, during the match that the Connecticut Sun won 71-62 against the Chicago Sky at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville. The incident occurred in the second quarter, at 6:35 minutes, when the Sun’s Bria Hartley and the Sky’s Rebecca Allen were battling for a rebound. Allen apparently grabbed Hartley’s right arm, who responded by pushing Allen to the ground. Then, Allen grabbed Hartley by the jersey. While officials were intervening to separate the players, Ariel Atkins, of the Sky, joined the fight, pushing Hartley and making contact with a referee. After a review that delayed the game about 10 minutes, Hartley and Allen were ejected for fighting, and Atkins was ejected “for being a climber”, according to team leader Angelica Suffren.

I think these kinds of things tend to happen when there’s no control over the game beforehand.

Tyler Marsh, Sky coach
Sky coach Tyler Marsh said things had already gotten physical between Hartley and Allen before the altercation. He said officials “missed” a previous incident between the two, stating that a foul wasn’t called after Hartley hit Allen in the face with an elbow. Marsh added that, often, an unsanctioned incident leads to situations like the one seen, regretting the expulsion of two key players for his team. Chicago only had eight players available in the second half, with Angel Reese (back) out of action for a sixth straight game.
