Alyssa Thomas Recaptures WNBA Assists Record

In an exciting encounter, Alyssa Thomas, a prominent WNBA player, has managed to reclaim the single-season assist record. Despite not focusing on personal milestones, her performance led her to surpass the record set by Caitlin Clark. The game, although full of individual achievements, saw their team, the Mercury, fall to the Connecticut Sun with a score of 87-84. Thomas, with an attitude focused on teamwork, highlighted the importance of her teammates in this achievement.

“Honestly, I didn’t know it was close. I didn’t focus on that, but I definitely give credit to my teammates, I couldn’t do it without them. It’s been a big change for me this year with a new offense that allows me to go out and make the reads I need to make”.

Thomas, who needed six assists to break the record in the game against Connecticut, where he played for many years before joining the Phoenix this season, achieved the historic assist on a three-pointer by Kathryn Westbeld, with 4:45 remaining in the second quarter. He finished the game with 10 assists, totaling 342 for the season. The 33-year-old player, who also holds the record for triple-doubles in a season and in her WNBA career, has demonstrated her versatility and leadership on the court. Her ability to play as a “point forward” has been key to facilitating the Mercury’s offense, with a large number of assists coming from three-point shots. With over 1,800 assists in his career, Thomas ranks seventh on the league’s all-time assists list, being the only guard in the top 10. This season, Thomas has averaged 9.2 assists per game, setting a new personal record, although he did not surpass Courtney Vandersloot’s record of 9.95 assists set in 2020.
