Zverev and an Umpire Assist Spectator After Accident in Halle

In an unexpected incident during the Halle tournament, Alexander Zverev and chair umpire Renaud Lichtenstein provided assistance to a spectator after an accident with an advertising hoarding. The event took place when a billboard came loose from the top of the stadium, hitting a spectator in the lower section. Zverev and Lichtenstein immediately went to help the affected person, providing her with ice.

Something like this has never happened in the 32 years of our tournament’s history. We deeply regret the incident.

The spectator, as a precautionary measure, was taken to a hospital. According to reports, she did not suffer serious injuries. Despite the incident, Zverev achieved a resounding victory over the American Marcos Giron with a score of 6-1 and 6-2 in the first round of the tournament, a warm-up for Wimbledon. This triumph adds to the good performance of the German tennis player on grass, after finishing as runner-up in Stuttgart the previous week. In other notable results of the day, Daniil Medvedev, third seed, defeated Quentin Halys with scores of 6-2 and 7-5. For his part, Karen Khachanov, eighth seed, defeated Zizou Bergs with a score of 7-5 and 6-3, also in the first round.
