British tennis player Katie Boulter has revealed details about the “disgusting” abuse and death threats that she and her family have received. Boulter, 28, shared screenshots of the messages received, one of which said “I hope you get cancer.” Another contained a death threat: “Candles and a coffin for your whole family.” “Go to hell, I lost the money my mother sent me,” said another message received by Boulter.

It becomes more evident every time you look at your phone. I think it just shows how vulnerable we are, you really don’t know if this person is in the place, if they are nearby or if they know where you live or something like that.

The message containing the death threat was sent to Boulter while she was playing her first-round match of the French Open against Carole Monnet, which she won.

Regarding death threats, it’s not something you want to read right after an emotional defeat. Most of the time you also receive it after winning.

Great Britain’s number 2 also spoke about the explicit messages she received and her concern for the younger players.

I’ve had quite a few things like that, [explicit images] that’s also a bigger problem. Young people really shouldn’t be seeing things like that or having things like that sent to them.

Boulter begins the defense of her Nottingham Open title on Tuesday, facing Lulu Sun of New Zealand in the round of 16.
