Dabrowski and Routliffe Conquer the US Open in Women’s Doubles

Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe won the US Open women’s doubles title, achieving their second championship in three years. The pair defeated Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova in an exciting final held at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Dabrowski and Routliffe, seeded third, defeated Townsend and Siniakova, who were the top seeds, with a score of 6-4 and 6-4. This triumph marks a special moment for Dabrowski, as it is her first major achievement after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The tennis player delayed part of her treatment to be able to compete at Wimbledon last year, where she and Routliffe reached the final. Townsend and Siniakova were looking to add the US Open title to their list of achievements, after winning Wimbledon last year and the Australian Open in January. Townsend became a prominent figure in the tournament, partly due to a post-match incident in singles. The American player recounted that her opponent, Jelena Ostapenko, told her she had no “class” or “education”, an exchange that generated debate.

“That has been a stigma in our community of being ‘uneducated’ and all those things, when it’s the furthest thing from the truth,” commented Townsend.

Townsend reached the fourth round in singles, losing to Barbora Krejcikova. In doubles, Townsend and Siniakova reached the final in a Grand Slam for the fifth time, eliminating Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez on their way. Dabrowski, 33, and Routliffe, 30, shared a prize of $1 million.
