Italy Advances to Davis Cup Semifinals After Defeating Austria
In a dominant demonstration, Italy, the current two-time champion, secured its place in the Davis Cup semi-finals by defeating Austria with a score of 2-0. The match took place this Wednesday in Bologna, Italy. Flavio Cobolli sealed the victory for Italy, defeating Filip Misolic with a score of 6-1, 6-3. Cobolli secured his triumph with a powerful winning serve, after 65 minutes of play, unleashing joy among the home crowd.Previously, Matteo Berrettini also contributed to the Italian success, defeating Jurij Rodionov with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4). Berrettini came back from a disadvantage in the second set, which led him to break serve in the ninth game. He managed to save three set points and finally prevailed in the tiebreaker.
The semi-final is scheduled for Friday. Italy boasts an impressive streak of 12 consecutive victories in the Davis Cup, since their last defeat in the group stage of 2023. The Italian team, currently at the top of the ranking, is looking for its third consecutive title and the fourth in its history. Jannik Sinner, who led Italy to victory in 2023 and 2024, decided not to participate in the final phase of the Davis Cup this season. Austria, ranked number 12, has only managed to beat Italy once in their six previous encounters, in the 1990 quarterfinals in Vienna, their best result in the team competition. The final phase of the Davis Cup in Bologna represents the sixth edition of the renewed event, where the champion is defined in a neutral venue. Carlos Alcaraz, world number 1 and recent runner-up after his match against Sinner in the ATP Finals in Turin, withdrew due to a hamstring injury. Spain will face the Czech Republic (seeded number 4), and Germany (seeded number 2) will play against Argentina in the remaining two quarterfinals on Thursday.
