Andy Murray seeks qualification for The Open in Golf

Former world number one in tennis, Andy Murray, has revealed his intention to participate in the regional qualifying rounds for The Open Championship. Following his retirement from professional tennis, Murray, a three-time Grand Slam winner who retired after last year’s Paris Olympics, has taken up golf regularly. Recently, he achieved an eagle on the 18th hole of the Wentworth pro-am, prior to the BMW PGA Championship. The British sportsman, with a handicap of 2, aims to reduce it and compete in the qualifying rounds for the oldest golf major.

“I have no ambitions to play in The Open, but I want to try to participate in the regional qualifying at some point,” Murray said.

Murray commented that several of his friends have participated in these classifications and he would like to compete if he reaches the appropriate level. Although he is aware of the quality of the players in these events, he considers that it would be a fun experience. Amateur and professional players with a scratch handicap are eligible to participate in the regional qualifying for The Open, which takes place at 15 locations in Great Britain and Ireland. The top finishers from each event advance to the final qualifying, where a place in The Open can be earned. When asked about his participation next summer, Murray replied that it won’t be next year, but in a couple of years, hoping to reach a level that allows him to compete without disgracing himself.
