United States Breathes Easy After Gold Cup Rout

After a turbulent start, the United States men’s national soccer team found relief in this summer’s Gold Cup. The team, under the direction of coach Mauricio Pochettino, achieved a resounding 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. The triumph was no coincidence. The United States dominated the match from start to finish, with two goals from Malik Tillman and another from Patrick Agyemang, who deflected a shot from Diego Luna. Substitutes Brenden Aaronson and Haji Wright completed the rout in the last ten minutes, significantly improving the USMNT’s goal difference. This victory came after a series of adverse results, including a 4-0 defeat against Switzerland, which raised doubts about the team’s performance. Before this match, the USMNT had suffered a streak of four consecutive home defeats, something that hadn’t happened since 1988. Furthermore, the team faced off-field tensions. Christian Pulisic’s absence from the Gold Cup, due to his decision to take a break, drew criticism from both fans and former players.

Pochettino reminded Pulisic that the coach is the one who makes the decisions, not the players.

The victory against Trinidad and Tobago, although against a lower-ranked team, was crucial for rebuilding the team’s confidence. Seven of the starters had less than seven international matches, so this victory was an important step in building a solid foundation. Technician Pochettino highlighted the importance of the victory and the need to keep improving. “It’s important to keep working. Nothing is done, but it’s important to feel positive to grow in confidence,” he said.

The victory was driven by the experience of some key players. Tim Ream and Chris Richards in defense, along with Alex Freeman and Max Arfsten on the flanks, provided security. Luca de la Torre and Sebastian Berhalter brought stability to the midfield, while Tillman led the attack, allowing Luna to perform defensively and provide two assists. For Tillman, this performance was an expected achievement, and he expressed his desire to take on a more important role. “I am very confident. I had a good season at PSV,” said Tillman, who scored 16 goals and five assists for his Dutch team in 2024-25 (34 games, all competitions). “I’ve been here quite a while. So yes, I take responsibility.” The combination of youth and experience was also evident in midfield. In the absence of Tyler Adams and Johnny Cardoso, Pochettino opted for De la Torre and Berhalter. The latter played a more defensive role, allowing De la Torre to seek offensive opportunities. Pochettino was satisfied with the performance of both players, highlighting the good connection between them. “The football relationship between Luca and [Sebastian] was fantastic and they controlled the game,” said Pochettino. “Both showed that they can fit very well in that position.” Luna also felt the support of her fellow veterans and her family. “It allows me to receive the ball and combine,” Luna said about playing with Tillman and De la Torre. “And then have experienced players who have been in difficult moments, be there and help along the way. Having good players around you always allows you to have more confidence and trust in the team.” The next challenge for this mix of youth and experience will be against Saudi Arabia in Austin, Texas.
