United States Advances in the 2025 Gold Cup: Dominance or Alert?

In the context of the 2025 Gold Cup, the United States national team has met expectations in the group stage, achieving a perfect three out of three. However, despite the results, the team’s performance has generated some debate. With consecutive victories, eight goals scored and only one conceded, the team, with an alternative lineup that includes notable absences such as Sergiño Dest, Antonee Robinson, Weston McKennie and captain Christian Pulisic, has demonstrated its ability to adapt. Coach Mauricio Pochettino, although satisfied with the result, did not hide his relief after the 2-1 victory over Haiti at AT&T Stadium. “Overall, it was a good performance, maybe we weren’t so [accurate] with the opportunities we had, I think we should have scored more,” Pochettino commented.

“It was a massive challenge for us because they are a very good team that plays direct.”

The match against Haiti revealed certain tensions. Haiti equalized the score after a defensive error, which led the United States to strive to generate danger. However, as Pochettino pointed out, efficiency in the final third of the field was poor. This match recalled the narrow victory against Saudi Arabia, where dynamic play and predictable moves were a constant. Forward Malik Tillman tried to change the course of the match, but two goals were disallowed due to referee decisions. In the match against Haiti, Patrick Agyemang scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute. The victory and the three points were deserved, but the last two matches were far from the resounding 5-0 with which they started the competition.
Mauricio Pochettino's USMNT made it three-for-three in the Gold Cup group stage.
When asked about the areas to improve, coach Pochettino replied: “Improve in all areas. Because we are going to have significant opponents starting next Sunday [in the qualifiers], it will be like a final.” The American team has advanced past the group stage, but the goal is much more ambitious for a team seeking the Gold Cup title. The margin for improvement is wide, especially for the knockout phase. The team will have a week to reorganize before the quarterfinals on June 29.
