Alyssa Thompson Could Debut for Chelsea This Weekend

Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor hopes Alyssa Thompson can make her Women’s Super League debut this Sunday against Aston Villa. The United States women’s national team winger, Thompson, signed last week from Angel City of the NWSL for a figure close to $1.3 million. She is currently awaiting WSL approval due to a protection she uses on her left arm. Thompson, 20, has not revealed the exact reason why she uses this protection, but Bompastor is confident that their new addition will be given the green light to play against Villa.

We are waiting to see if he can play. We don’t have confirmation yet, but we hope he can participate in this match.

Bompastor also confirmed that Sam Kerr could make her first appearance in 20 months from the bench, after recovering from a serious knee injury. The Australian forward was a substitute in the opening day victory against Manchester City, while USWNT center-back Naomi Girma remains out.

Alyssa Thompson has been using protection in recent weeks. The Tottenham Hotspur coach, Martin Ho, hopes his team can build on their first WSL win in nine months when they visit his former club, Everton. He was successful in his first match in charge with a 1-0 victory over West Ham last Sunday, which marked the club’s first three points in the division since January. The Liverpool-born coach, Ho, former Everton assistant, said:

I think we still have a long way to go and a lot to build, but the most important thing is that it was for the players, especially because not winning in nine months is difficult for anyone. That includes the staff.

Manchester United will look to recover from their Champions League qualifier defeat midweek against Brann with a win against newly promoted London City. Marc Skinner’s United, who thrashed Leicester 4-0 in their first match last week, fell 1-0 in the first leg in Bergen on Thursday and are in the midst of a tight schedule of four matches in 11 days. Leicester will play their first home league match of the season against Liverpool, who also conceded four goals on the opening day, losing 4-1 at home to their Merseyside rivals, Everton.
