Son Heung-Min: “A dream come true” at LAFC

The LAFC’s new star signing, Son Heung-Min, has expressed his enthusiasm for joining the MLS club, describing his transfer as “a dream come true” after a decade of success with Tottenham Hotspur. During his presentation press conference in Los Angeles, Son shared his first impressions and thanks.

“Good afternoon everyone, what can I say? A dream come true. L.A., what a city. Obviously, I want to thank the ownership, John [Thorrington, co-president and general manager], Bennet [Rosenthal, principal owner], they have worked very hard to bring me here and join LAFC. I am here, I am more than happy and very excited to see all the Korean fans outside”.

The agreement with LAFC, which makes Son a franchise player, extends until 2027, with an option for 2028 and an additional option until June 2029. The transfer from Tottenham Hotspur is estimated to be around $26 million, setting a record in MLS. Son, twice Tottenham Player of the Year, admitted that leaving the Premier League club, which he joined in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen, was an emotional but necessary decision for his career.

“I think it was obviously very emotional, because I gave it my all. I felt I needed a new chapter, a new challenge, that’s why I chose LAFC and, obviously, I am very… I think we can say I’m older, but I still have good physical condition, good legs and I still have good quality, I would say. Obviously, I’m here to perform, but I also want to give some advice to the young players”.

After training during the preseason with his former club, the footballer, who has participated in three World Cups, feels ready to debut in the MLS.

“My physical condition is excellent, as I have just gone through the pre-season. I came here to play football and I am ready to play, but some preparatory work needs to be done and I will work with the coaching staff and others to get on the field as soon as possible”.

With Tottenham, Son scored 137 goals in all competitions and was the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot award in the 2021-22 season. At LAFC, the forward will reunite with his former Tottenham teammate, Hugo Lloris. The LAFC is currently in sixth place in the Western Conference standings and their next match will be against the Chicago Fire FC on Saturday, August 9th.
