Cristiano Ronaldo continues to make history in world football. The Portuguese star became the all-time top scorer in World Cup qualifying, equaling the record of Carlos Ruiz of Guatemala.
Ronaldo Ties a Historic Record
The Portugal captain achieved this feat in his team’s 3-2 victory against Hungary last Tuesday, scoring his 39th goal in the World Cup qualifying phase from the penalty spot. This achievement puts him at the top of the historical table alongside Carlos Ruiz.
Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al Nassr, had already demonstrated his goal-scoring ability in Portugal’s 5-0 victory against Armenia the previous Saturday, where he scored two goals.
In a social media post, Ronaldo expressed his enthusiasm: “Two games, two victories, let’s go Portugal!”

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi, for the first time in his career, finished as the top scorer in the South American qualifiers.
Messi, who rested in Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Ecuador in their last World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, finished with eight goals, one ahead of Colombia’s Luis Díaz and Bolivia’s Miguel Terceros.
He is three goals away from Ronaldo and Ruiz in the historical ranking.
The Argentine captain scored twice in the 3-0 victory against Venezuela in Buenos Aires last week, in what is expected to be his last competitive home match.
Messi, 38 years old, has scored a record 114 goals in 194 matches for his country. Ronaldo is the top scorer in men’s international football with 141 goals in 223 appearances for Portugal.
