Pochettino Defends the United States National Team After Historic Rout

The coach Mauricio Pochettino defended his team after the resounding 5-1 victory of the United States National Team over Uruguay. This result marked a milestone, being the first time that the American team has scored five goals against a World Cup winner or any South American team.

I don’t want to be negative, but I hate the idea that they are not regular players. What does that mean? It’s the United States playing, it’s the national team. You have to leave that mentality behind. Every time we decide the starting lineup, it’s the United States team that plays.

Pochettino expressed his discontent at the idea that some players were considered “not regular”, highlighting the respect that all team members deserve. He emphasized the importance of connection and teamwork, aspects that, according to him, have improved noticeably. On this occasion, Pochettino did not have key figures such as Christian Pulisic, Chris Richards, Tim Weah, and Tyler Adams, who are recovering from injuries. Weston McKennie was also absent due to changes at his club, Juventus. The coach reminded that no position in the squad for the 2026 World Cup is guaranteed. After the victory, Pochettino expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress during the November training camp.

The match also saw the first international goals from Alex Freeman, Sebastian Berhalter, and Tanner Tessmann. Freeman, son of former NFL player Antonio Freeman, was chosen as the Player of the Match, scoring two goals. Pochettino praised Freeman’s performance and potential, highlighting his versatility on the field.
