Nice Players Suffer Assault by Fans
Nice forwards, Terem Moffi and Jérémie Boga, have been sidelined from the team after allegedly being assaulted by their own fans on Sunday night. The incident occurred after the 3-1 defeat against Lorient. According to sources, around 400 ultras waited for the players at the club’s training ground on Sunday night, creating a tense atmosphere. Two supporters boarded the team bus to express their anger before violence erupted as the players got off. Moffi has been put on sick leave for a week, while Boga will be out for five days. Both players were hit, spat at, kicked and insulted by the ultras, according to eyewitnesses on Boulevard Jean-Luciano. The two soccer players filed charges against the alleged aggressors with the local police on Monday. Nice issued an official statement about the incident. The club understands the frustration generated by the succession of poor performances and results far from its values. The statement continued by expressing that the acts of violence are unacceptable and that the club offers its support to those affected, strongly condemning these events. The defeat in Brittany was Nice’s sixth consecutive in all competitions. Moffi and Boga were the most attacked, accused by the fans of having a bad attitude in the last few weeks. Moffi was hit, kicked, and had his hair pulled, needing the help of goalkeeper Yéhvann Diouf to escape the crowd. The sporting director, Florian Maurice, also needed security protection. However, coach Franck Haise was acclaimed, and the ultras showed him their support. The current captain, Melvin Bard, and local midfielder Sofiane Diop were not attacked.
