James Maddison Suffers Injury in Pre-Season Match

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison suffered a knee injury during the 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in the last match of the pre-season tour in Asia. Spurs coach Thomas Frank confirmed that the injury affected the same knee that sidelined him at the end of last season. He described it as a “bad” injury and a “brutal moment”.

“Sometimes in life and in football things can be beautiful and brutal,” said Frank.

Frank added that they were pretty sure it was the same knee that was injured before. This moment threatened to overshadow the emotional farewell match of striker Son Heung-Min. A Son was given a guard of honor before the match in his native South Korea, at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, and was moved to tears as he walked through the tunnel at the end of the match. The match occurred one day after he announced his intention to leave Tottenham this summer, in what he described as the “most difficult decision of his career”. “I think it’s very likely that it will be Sonny’s last game because he’s very close,” Frank said after the match about his likely departure.
