Expansion League Clubs Sue the Liga MX and the FMF
A legal conflict shakes Mexican soccer. Liga de Expansión teams have filed a lawsuit against Liga MX and the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), according to sources close to Alofoke Deportes.
The dispute centers on the possible return of promotion and relegation in Mexican soccer.

The lawsuit, filed before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) by ten clubs from the Liga de Expansión, seeks to reinstate the promotion and relegation system for the 2025-26 season.
The main basis of the demand is a prior CAS decision that allowed the temporary suspension of promotion and relegation in Liga MX for six years, a suspension that was expected to end in 2026.
The debate centers on whether promotion and relegation will return for the 2025-26 season or the 2026-27 season, which generates controversy among the parties involved.
The next General Assembly of Liga MX is scheduled for May 26, one day after the second leg of the 2025 Clausura Tournament final between Toluca and Club América. The possible return of promotion and relegation is expected to be a topic of discussion among those interested. One day later, a separate General Assembly of the Liga de Expansión teams will be held.
The official suspension of promotion and relegation was established in 2020, in response to the uncertainty generated by the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexican soccer. In response to requests for financial assistance from second division clubs, a deal was agreed with Liga MX to provide annual payments to the second division, but with the condition of temporarily suspending promotion and relegation.
