Liverpool’s former coach, Jürgen Klopp, revealed the demanding nature of elite training and expressed his amazement that Pep Guardiola still finds time to play golf.
Klopp, 58 years old, left the position of coach in May 2024 after almost nine years at the helm of Liverpool, citing exhaustion. Since then, he has been working as head of football for the Red Bull group and its fleet of clubs.
In an interview, the German coach reiterated that it is unlikely that he will return to coaching in the short term.
“I didn’t miss anything in my life because I never thought about it,” Klopp said. “So for almost 25 years, I went to a wedding twice, one of them was mine and the other was two months ago. In 25 years, I’ve been to the cinema four times, all in the last eight weeks. Now it’s nice to be able to do it.”

Klopp led Liverpool to several major titles, including a Premier League title and the Champions League, although he could have won more if it weren’t for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who snatched the league title from them on several occasions.

“Think of your absolute movie star,” she added. “For me, Daniel Craig, James Bond. And you think, ‘Oh my God, it’s James Bond!’ I would think: Where is he right now? What is he doing?
“But in the end, he gets up in the morning, brushes his teeth. He’s on a film set and a film set is not what we see later in the cinema. You’re sitting there and you do the same scene 25 times. You don’t think about these things. But I had this life. I know how almost all football coaches live. They live for the job, with everything. You can’t succeed in this business without doing it that way.
“But then I tell Pep [Guardiola]: he improved his golf handicap with age! He didn’t have a damn minute to play golf! That’s why he’s a genius and I’m not.”
