Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones exploded against his team after a ninth defeat in 12 matches, a situation that puts coach Arne Slot in check. Slot, despite the humiliation suffered in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven, insists that he has the support of the club’s management and is not worried about his position. Not only are the results worrying, but also the way the team is losing. This is the first time in 72 years that the club has lost three matches by a margin of three or more goals, following defeats against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City.

I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. It’s unacceptable.

We are going to try to bring this team back to where it belongs, to show everyone again what this club is all about and why people call it the best team in the world, but right now, we are in the shit and that has to change.

Six months ago, the team was easily winning the Premier League, but now it faces the booing of its own fans, a reality that Slot is facing. Although not in immediate danger, the next two matches, against West Ham on Sunday and Sunderland at home in a week, have become crucial.

Curtis Jones argues with the referee during Liverpool’s defeat to PSV in the Champions League.Slot declared he felt safe and supported by the board, although he acknowledged the need to improve results.

I feel safe, I’m fine. I have a lot of support from above. It would be good to turn it around and get a win, of course, but if you’re not doing well, it’s normal to be asked questions. I’m fine with my position. It’s not the first time I’ve been in a difficult position, but it’s time to turn it around.

Slot must assume much of the responsibility for not reversing the situation and for not making changes when things go wrong. However, even he cannot be solely to blame for individual mistakes. Errors haunt Ibrahima Konaté this season, but the situation now affects even his defensive partner, Virgil van Dijk, who committed an unnecessary penalty that allowed Ivan Perisic to open the scoring. Dominik Szoboszlai, the only player who has performed at an acceptable level this season, tied the match, but goals from Guus Til and two from Couhaib Driouech embarrassed the home side in the second half. Most players left Anfield quickly, and even Van Dijk, who is usually reliable, avoided reporters.

I think it’s always about the team and I think we can all do better; there’s talk about individuals, but this applies to everyone, including myself. I don’t think it’s the time to emphasize individual mistakes.
