Liverpool signs Alexander Isak in a record deal

Liverpool has reached an agreement to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, in what is shaping up to be the most expensive transfer in British football history. According to sources close to the club, the accepted offer amounts to 125 million pounds sterling (approximately 170 million dollars), although Newcastle assures that the agreement reaches 130 million pounds. Isak is expected to undergo medical examinations before the transfer deadline closes on Monday at 7 p.m. BST (2 p.m. ET). This signing brings an end to one of the longest transfer sagas of the summer, with Isak pushing to leave Newcastle for over a month. The 25-year-old player did not participate in the club’s pre-season tour of Asia and has not played for Eddie Howe’s team this season. Earlier this month, Isak released a statement where he claimed that the Newcastle board had “broken promises” and insisted that a transfer this summer would be best for all parties.

With this transfer, Isak will become the most expensive signing in Premier League history, surpassing Enzo Fernández, who joined Chelsea for an initial fee of £106.3 million in February 2023. This is the second transfer record broken by Liverpool this summer, following the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial fee of £100 million, plus £16 million in add-ons. Meanwhile, Virgil Van Dijk has urged Liverpool not to let Joe Gomez leave on the last day of the transfer market. Gomez has been linked with a departure from Anfield, especially if Liverpool manages to sign Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace, but Van Dijk insists that his teammate should stay.

It’s a very good question, because when he entered the circumstances in which he personally finds himself, he was outstanding. Obviously I talk a lot with him, so I know it wasn’t easy, but that says a lot about him as a person, as a player, I just appreciate it.

Van Dijk added: “He’s my friend, of course I want him to stay. But it doesn’t work like that. I’m not the boss. It’s not a friendly business. It’s the highest world we live in. Let’s see what happens. Of course I want him to stay, as a friend and as a player.”
