Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has been called up by the Sweden national team for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Slovenia and Kosovo.
Isak has not participated with Newcastle this season, amid interest from Liverpool. According to sources, Liverpool had an offer rejected in early August.
The 25-year-old player issued a statement last week expressing his loss of confidence in Newcastle due to broken promises. The club responded by insisting that the conditions for his departure had not been met.
Days later, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed his dismay at the situation unfolding publicly and preferred that everything be handled behind closed doors.
Isak missed the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League on Monday. Reports from Tuesday indicate that he still wants to leave the club, despite the visit of Newcastle’s owners to his home in an attempt at reconciliation.
