Liverpool has finalized the signing of striker Alexander Isak, coming from Newcastle United, in a deal that sets a new record in British football. The Premier League champions accepted a £125 million (approximately $170 million) offer for the Swedish international in the early hours of Monday, and the player has signed a six-year contract with the Anfield club. Isak will wear the number 9 shirt.

It’s been a long road to get here. I am very happy to be a part of this team, this club, and everything it represents. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m looking forward to it.

The signing ends one of the longest transfer sagas of the summer, with Isak pushing for his departure from Newcastle for more than a month. The player has not been included in Eddie Howe’s team this season and issued a statement last month in which he claimed that Newcastle’s management had “broken” promises, and insisted that a transfer this summer would be best for all parties. Isak, 25 years old, becomes the most expensive signing in Premier League history, surpassing Moisés Caicedo, who joined Chelsea for £115 million from Brighton in the summer of 2023.

This is the second transfer record Liverpool breaks this summer, as Arne Slot’s team initially spent £100 million, plus £16 million in add-ons, to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in June. The latest deal also takes Liverpool’s summer spending to over £400 million, although the departures of several first-team players, including Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez, help offset the club’s significant financial outlay. Isak added:

I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I am a forward, but I always want to give the maximum possible to the team, mainly goals, but much more than that too. I want to win everything.
