Marc Guéhi’s Transfer to Liverpool Falls Through

The proposed transfer of Marc Guéhi to Liverpool has fallen through, according to sources close to the negotiation. Crystal Palace, the player’s current team, withdrew their agreement at the last moment, thus frustrating the signing. Palace chairman Steve Parish had accepted Liverpool’s offer of £35 million (approximately $47.4 million) on Monday afternoon. Guéhi had even been given permission to undergo a medical. However, Palace backed out after failing to secure the desired replacement for the defender. This situation represents a setback for Arne Slot’s team, although the club has already reinforced its defense this summer with the incorporation of Giovanni Leoni, coming from Parma. The collapse of the agreement justifies Liverpool’s decision to resist proposals for center-back Joe Gomez, from both Brighton & Hove Albion and AC Milan.

Conversations between the two clubs had been ongoing for several weeks, especially as Guéhi has only one year left on his contract with Palace. Parish’s change of stance comes after Palace manager Oliver Glasner insisted on Sunday that he wanted the central defender to remain at Selhurst Park.

“There is no agreement. We decide, he is our player and has a contract. We can decide. It depends on us. The only one who decides if Marc stays is our president,” Glasner stated in a press conference after Palace’s victory over Aston Villa, in which Guéhi scored a goal.

Guéhi arrived at Palace from Chelsea in 2021 and has been team captain, with 155 appearances and helping the club win its first major trophy in last season’s FA Cup final. In addition, he has 23 international matches with England.
