Marc Guéhi’s Future at Crystal Palace: Uncertainty on the Horizon

Marc Guéhi’s future at Crystal Palace is uncertain. The club’s chairman, Steve Parish, and coach Oliver Glasner, have not been able to secure his stay at Selhurst Park. The London football club, Crystal Palace, could be considering letting Guéhi go, as Liverpool has shown interest in the defender. It is rumored that Liverpool initiated talks with Palace for Guéhi, with the South London club expecting a fee close to £30 million (41 million dollars) plus £5 million in add-ons. Liverpool are looking for defensive reinforcements after Jarell Quansah joined Bayer Leverkusen and Joe Gomez continues to recover from a minor injury. Parish provided an update on Guéhi’s situation on Thursday after Palace’s 1-0 victory over Fredrikstad FK in their first leg of the UEFA Conference League qualifier.

If Marc Guehi wants to sign a contract, he can stay. If he doesn’t, we have to analyze it. It’s a difficult situation, everyone has to sell players to comply with the rules. Players leaving for free is not an ideal situation. That is a situation we will have to analyze in the coming days.

The Palace coach, Glasner, also shared his thoughts in his post-match press conference, joking about the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market.

We arrived very, very late to find replacements. I think we could have done much better than we did. It’s not the best way to start the season. I think we are below the limit. If Marc [Guehi] leaves, maybe I’ll try my boots because I was a central defender. We have to act. It’s the future of Crystal Palace and we need to add numbers. I only know that if Marc leaves and is not available for Fredrikstad, we will have big problems. That’s pretty clear. We can’t register anyone. So, for my part, he has to stay.

Glasner’s comments come as star midfielder Eberechi Eze is expected to complete a £67.5 million ($91 million) move to Arsenal. The Palace manager confirmed that Eze would not play for the south London club again.

I have to apologize to all of you because I didn’t tell the truth yesterday. I thought he would play… he called me and said he didn’t feel well. You have to ask him [why], maybe in a few days. No [I don’t think he will play for the club again].
