Gotham FC Crowned NWSL Champion in an Epic Final

Gotham FC won the NWSL championship on Saturday, after defeating the Washington Spirit with a score of 1-0. The match, played in front of a crowd of 18,000 fans at PayPal Park, witnessed a duel full of emotion and strategy. The decisive goal came in the 80th minute, thanks to Rose Lavelle, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the match. The assist came from Bruninha, who sent a precise cross to the edge of the area, facilitating Lavelle’s winning shot.

We’ve had a year with many ups and downs, so I think this is the icing on the cake.

This triumph marks Gotham’s second title in three years under the direction of Juan Carlos Amorós, becoming the first team classified in eighth position to win the championship. The road to victory included the elimination of the Kansas City Current and the Orlando Pride. Coach Amorós, who now has two NWSL titles, expressed his excitement and pride in his team’s achievement.

I think it’s a dream come true. That’s why we work so hard. At the end of the day, I’m just a guy who loves football, from a neighborhood in Madrid, and I’m here celebrating with some of the best players in the world.

Before the match, attention focused on the situation of the Spirit’s Trinity Rodman, who was recovering from a knee sprain. Despite not being a starter, Rodman entered the field in the 56th minute, although her impact on the game was limited. Gotham demonstrated aggression from the start, pressing Spirit in their own field. Jaedyn Shaw sought the goal on several occasions, but her attempts failed to overcome goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury. The match remained in a tactical balance for most of the first half, with physical play increasing. Kouassi from Spirit created danger on several occasions. In the 55th minute, he connected with Bethune, who assisted Santos, but Gotham’s Sonnett made a crucial block. In the 59th minute, Kouassi forced a foul from Reale, and Amorós, anticipating a possible expulsion, substituted Reale for Bruninha in the 63rd minute. This change proved to be key, as Bruninha assisted in the winning goal.
