Gio Reyna signs for Borussia Mönchengladbach
American midfielder Gio Reyna has finalized his transfer to Borussia Mönchengladbach, coming from Borussia Dortmund, as announced by the clubs this Saturday. Reyna, 22 years old, has signed a three-year contract, extending until the summer of 2028. This move marks the end of his six-year stint at Dortmund, where he began his professional career after leaving the New York City FC academy. Represents a fresh start for Reyna, after injuries and the struggle for minutes in the first team hampered his promising projection.Reyna only started in three German Bundesliga matches last season, after having been on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League during the second half of the previous campaign. Although he was part of the Dortmund team that reached the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup this summer, Reyna only played one match as a substitute for 12 minutes. His participation in the tournament prevented him from being in the squad of the United States men’s national team for the Concacaf Gold Cup. Son of former American soccer player Claudio Reyna, he has played 32 matches with the United States national team and scored eight goals. With only one substitute appearance since Mauricio Pochettino took over as coach last year, Reyna hopes that his signing for Gladbach will revitalize his career and secure him a place in the US national team for next summer’s World Cup. He joins a Gladbach team that finished tenth in the Bundesliga last season and starts the new season at home against Hamburg on Sunday.Borussia is a fantastic and great club. I am delighted that the transfer has been finalized and I am looking forward to meeting everyone here, as well as facing the next matches together.
