Chelsea Secures Alyssa Thompson in a Million-Dollar Transfer
Chelsea has finalized an agreement with Angel City for the transfer of American forward Alyssa Thompson. The operation, according to sources close to the matter, is initially valued at around 1.5 million dollars, which is equivalent to 1.1 million pounds sterling.
This transfer could reach $2 million (£1.5 million) if certain additional variables are met, which would mark a milestone in the women’s transfer market.
The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) star has agreed to a five-year contract with the Women’s Super League (WSL) champions.
The player flew to London for negotiations with Chelsea.

Chelsea’s interest in Thompson intensified, especially after the injury of Mayra Ramírez, who will be out of the courts until 2026. The deal is not yet classified as a world record, as Lizbeth Ovalle’s transfer to Orlando Pride surpassed the previous maximum set when Arsenal paid $1.3 million for Olivia Smith from Liverpool. With specific add-ons, the deal could amount to almost $2 million if all requirements are met. However, the deal is unlikely to reach the world record mark.
Angel City and the NWSL showed reluctance to let Thompson go, who has scored six goals in 16 league appearances and has been selected 22 times for the United States women’s national team, debuting at 17 years old.
Although personal terms and a verbal agreement have been reached, Chelsea has until the transfer deadline at 11 p.m. BST (6 p.m. ET) on Thursday to finalize the deal.
Angel City is in ninth place in the NWSL standings, just one point behind eighth-place Gotham FC, who hold the last playoff spot with eight games remaining.
Chelsea will kick off the 2025-26 WSL season on Friday at home against rivals Manchester City. After achieving a domestic treble, the champions are aiming for their seventh consecutive league title.
