Despite coming back from 2-0 down to tie 2-2 at Blundell Park, United fell in a penalty shootout that ended 12-11, with misses from Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, summer signings. Goalkeeper André Onana only managed to stop one penalty from Grimsby.

This defeat marked the first time United has lost a Carabao Cup match against a fourth-division team, and their first elimination in the second round since 2014.
  • Manchester United suffers a surprising defeat against Grimsby, from the fourth division.
  • Amorim points out a low performance and a questionable attitude in the team.

“The way we started the match, we weren’t even present,” said Amorim. “When everything is so important in our club, everything that happened, it’s a problem in our club, we should do much better.

Amorim harshly criticized his players, suggesting attitude problems within the team. “I feel that my players spoke very clearly today about what they want,” he added. “I think now I know that the best team won, the only team that was on the field. I think my team and the players spoke very loudly today.”

The coach also commented on the need for a change: “I think this is a bit the limit. I think something has to change. Right now, we need to focus on the weekend and then we’ll have time to think. In penalties, the feeling is the same. I think football was really fair today. The best team won”. Despite an investment of over £200 million in new signings since the end of last season, the team is still struggling to improve. Amorim acknowledges that it takes time to change United’s situation. “You can’t change everything in a summer,” he stated. “But you need to win matches. You need not to show this kind of performance. That’s more than a result. That’s the biggest problem of the team. I think it was very clear today. When you play against a fourth division team, it’s not the goalkeeper [that costs you the victory], it’s everything. “It’s the atmosphere, it’s the way we face the competition. We know we are in a moment where people will pay attention to everything. Every detail is going to be massive and we showed that performance today. So my players spoke for me very loudly.”
